How high?

I played in the weekly club aggregate tournament on Wednesday. We didn't do very well, being on the wrong side of too many "normal" games that were not bid at the other tables. Ricky and Horst won our way, with Jim and Peter taking the East West first prize.

I did have an interesting night though. On four separate occasions I had to decide how high to raise Norman's 1♠ bid, some of the decisions being more clear-cut than others. How high do you go?

  1. Good quiz. I'll see what Anna says too.I would go for:
    1 - 3S
    2 - Pass? I don't want them getting to 4H
3 - 3S (or maybe even 4S, as I reckon they have a Heart game)
4 - I'd start with 2H here, then bid up to 4S next time.

  2. Actually I might just bid 4S for the first two to save me thinking.

  3. Assuming that it is love all for all four hands ...

    1. 3S. Concerned about holding three hearts and worthless king of clubs, so I don't want to bid 4S and give LHO an easy double when he doesn't have a heart fit.

    2. 4S.

    3. 3S. A classic example of the bid.

    4. 3H, fit jump. A little light on values but strong distribution. I'd be concerned that 2H might finish the auction if it only promises tolerance for spades.

    1. both Jun and I went for an immediate 4S. What's the advantage of 3H? Give partner a better idea of what to do over 5 minor?

    2. I'm trying to stop them bidding 5m and 3H is more likely to do that than 4S.

  4. John - what did you bid, and how did it work out?

  5. This blog made me smile. I would bid 2S on every one of these hands....not kidding. The last 2 are closer but still I will resist bidding 3S. On the first 2, having 5-card support is often a red herring but more than that these hands offer more defence than offence and by staying low I may prevent them from bidding a cold game. Bidding 4S directly on any of these hands is just bonkers.
